A grandfather to his grandson: “There is fight in me, a fight between 2 wolves. One is bad, angry, greedy, jealous, arrogant and not be trusted. The other is good. He is peaceful, loving, caring, honest and reliable. These wolves also fight in you like in any other person.”

The boy pondered for a moment as asked: “Which of both wolves will win?”

The old man smiled and said: “the wolf you feed.“

definitions of wealth… ๐Ÿš or ๐Ÿ’ฐ

Whatever your definition of wealth is, you are right.
Your definition of wealth is yours alone ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ and will (probably) result in important life choices in your path towards being wealthy.

For some wealth means having more/lots of money ๐Ÿ’ฐ.

In this case your best options are (non exhaustive list):

  • become an investment banker
  • measure how much you get paid per minute spent working. Then ruthlessly maximize payment per minute and minutes worked.
  • marry money
  • study the science and language of money (from ROI to bitcoin over to taxation and retirement plans)
  • … maximize โ‚ฌ, $, … whatever you do.

For others it is having more options ๐Ÿš.

In this case I would say (non exhaustive list):

  • it means being grateful for what you already have ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป.
And by reading this it is fair to say you are already wealthy because you have access to the internet while reading this, are not out there looking for food, have a roof over your head, can choose to watch TV or spend time with our family,…
  • it means working towards having even more options in your life ๐Ÿš๐Ÿš๐Ÿš.
Personal freedom ๐Ÿš. To able to do What you want and believe is right, When you want, Where you want – while making the world a better place.
note: And this includes how different spheres of your life can be combined (work, family, friends, personal development,…)

Whatever your definition is. Embrace your choices and go for it ๐Ÿš€.

Peace out. โœŒ๐Ÿผ

Build bridges ๐ŸŒ‰

As a small business looking to make an impact ๐Ÿ’ฅย you want to build bridges๐ŸŒ‰.

And I mean build bridges like…all the time.ย This is related to the importance of partnering up I talked about a while back.

Donยดt worry too much about where they lead to. Nobody says you have to cross them…

Bridges give you optionsโ™ฆ๏ธโ™ ๏ธโ™ฅ๏ธโ™ฃ๏ธ. Bridges allow for 2-way traffic.

The building itself is a process that enriches you.

When you build, you learn. When you build together, you learn exponentially more.

If you wonder if aside from business there is a political angle to my statement. Rest assured, there absolutely is๐Ÿ˜Ž.

Build bridges, not walls.* (Dr. Martin Luther King)

*and if the wall is built, dig a tunnel while you prepare to tear it downย

Use light to fight darkness.

Being a small business (owner), negative feelings sometimes can be overwhelming.

Self-doubt, anger, envy, greed, selfishness,… both as an individual or as a business pull you back. They keep you small. Make you focus on the problem and not the solution.

So I try to push them back. Use light to fight darkness.

I deeply believe that good deeds, good thoughts and good words can keep this darkness at bay. It takes some discipline and effort but it works.

Be your best you.

Mentor or Hero?

May 4, 2018 by Wim GE De Vos 1 Comment

Real Super Hero

me being Tony Stark ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Loads of business “self-help” books go on about why you should look for a mentor. For advice, guidance, insights and a bit of help here and there. Not me.

I would say, go and pick some heroes first. Heroes are far more powerful in my view. Let me quickly explain why:

  • Heroes are in no short supply. They come in all colours and shapes. Finding a mentor mostly happens within the circle of people you meet and know.
  • Heroes are analysed, dissected and explained by others. Whereas mentors work mainly from self-analysis and their own framework of success.
  • Heroes work together well and can be changed out when needed. Mentors create a longer term dependency and the relationship is often exclusive.
  • Heroes cannot be used as an excuse (hear yourself say “hey, i failed because when studying Steve Jobs, Hubspot and Sesame Street I found out they got some of this shit wrong…”). Mentors are often brought in as a (fake) insurance policy for success. Which is both unrealistic and unfair.

But most of all, I feel it is a matter of attitude towards your future. Active or passive.

You pick your heroes and study them, learn to think and act like them. Approach this if it were some intensive continuous training exercise. This is how you interiorise a success-attitude. Or you find a mentor and ask for advice and guidance (so the mentors initiative and timescales). Mainly a receiving more passive approach.

Act as if you own your destiny. Pick and study your heroes well. And if a mentor crosses your path introduce him to your heroes.

Note: I am much more in favour of the concept of “mentor-ing“. A do-word as they say. Mentoring is a crucial activity for those who want to lead change and achieve a vision.
