4 rules to Make More Money

January 11, 2021 by Wim GE De Vos Leave a Comment

As a small business owner or operator you know that growing in size, quality, service and impact requires resources. One of these resources is money. And I am here to tell you that you do not need to run to the bank just yet. Look at profit first.

Profit is the fuel a growth business needs.

When focussing on profit it helps to have some principles to shape our thinking and attention.

Here are 4 rules we use ourselves at Genesis Home Technology Architects when we look at profits (picked up from Chris Guillebeau who will have gotten it from some other generous soul):

  1. Think DEBT CONTROL: Hang on to your wallet and only spend money on what grows your business.
  2. Think VALUE: Price your product or service in relation to the benefit it provides, not the cost of producing it. (more on this in Pricing 101)
  3. Think SIMPLICITY: Offer customers a limited range of prices and offerings.
  4. Think SCALABILITY: Get paid more than once for the same thing or from the same customer.*

*Building up trust is the secret ingredient here. Think long-term customer relationships, service contracts and upgrades.

Small businesses with BIG ambitions all require FOCUS on what matters.

In every stage of the game.

The importance of Demos

June 22, 2020 by Wim GE De Vos Leave a Comment

wow-moment

Most of what we sell is too hard to understand without a demo.

If a picture is worth a thousand words,

a demonstration is probably worth a million.*

Steve Blank in The 4 steps to the epiphany.

So let´s ask ourselves the following 6 questions:

  • Do you have a demo script?
  • Do you have a demo space?
  • Do you have a demo strategy?
  • Does your demo create a WOW moment?
  • Who does the demo?
  • How often do you demo?

There is a direct correlation between:

the amount of WOW moments you create

&

the growth of your business… *

*YOU, once you got your demo-act together.

Predicting the future

April 21, 2020 by Wim GE De Vos 2 Comments

Today there are more futurologists out there than the total sum of “self-declared expert” national football coaches, presidents of nations and health experts in virology together.

There is a type of of futurologists I find interesting though.

Enter the “The Builders” -> Predicting the future by creating it.

Marc Andreessen & his VC squad wrote a challenging piece recently “It´s time to build“. Check it out.
Triple AAA: Actionable – Ambitious – A-political.
What will you build?

Tim Sweeney & the gaming gang on the metaverse. “Fortnite and the metaverse”
Going beyond the internet.
How to escape the stronghold of Facebook, Google, Apple,…?

Marc Cuban & his entrepreneurial posse on challenges and avenues for action. “What would you do as president“.
Particularly interesting how Cuban mentions existing trends with transformative power.
How do we amplify transformative trends for the better?

Striking how all of them try to predict the future by asking questions, invite to action, look for perspective and see transformation as a way forward.

Maybe, just maybe, we can learn from their approach?

It will be harder for sure than sitting back and consuming what is fed to us.
But it might just be more rewarding and have a real impact if we do…

Small decisions with a BIG impact 🤜🏻.

WOW & after-WOW

March 10, 2020 by Wim GE De Vos Leave a Comment

Extracts from “How Tech Makes an Experience Out of Everything”, WSJ.

Insights in how a company roles & relationships can evolve by using tech to focus on experiences.

“WSJ: Where are the biggest openings for experience to make a difference on the bottom line?

Technology is where the opportunity really is, and the melding of it with the old things. And in the technology space, we think of common things like virtual reality, augmented reality, automation, et cetera, which are important. But what I’m thinking of right now is, are there other facets that you don’t look at, but are about the experience?”

“WSJ: Can traditional, analog companies improve experience?

Do you like Muji [the seller of household items and clothes] products? The lead designer there once said that Muji’s philosophy is to not go after what he calls the wow effect, the first impression. He said at Muji we look for the after wow. The after wow is you buy it, bring it home, and after a month say, that’s good. You know? So the after wow is a deeper experience relationship.

Most of what we award is about “wow!” Which doesn’t realize a recurring revenue service. It’s a “Oh, you really marketed to me really well, I bought it, I kind of tired of it, it isn’t useful for me.” So I’m going to be looking for the after wow.”

“WSJ: So do you have to be patient?

Not patient. Logical. Because its only something you can measure in larger time steps. If you’re trying to measure in a quarter, it’s not possible in a product that you’re trying to get people to enjoy for a year or two years or three years.

We have to think of all products like subscription products. Technically everything is a kind of subscription product; if you go to the supermarket and buy apple they want you to come back and buy apples. Nowadays how there are very few one-time products you buy, even homes.”

Let´s make WOW the standard. Together.

2020 – making better quality promises.

January 1, 2020 by Wim GE De Vos Leave a Comment

New-Year-Resolution-Quotes.jpg

A new year. A new decade. A new approach to the new years resolution list 📜…
Instead of spitting out fresh new promises let us recycle promises ♻️. Recycle with a twist 🍸.
Revive long lost promises. And make them better 👌🏻.
.
.
This year I am making better quality promises.
.
.
More personal, more precise, more generous.
Small but better promises with a BIG impact 💥 (hopefully).
Let´s try to be a better version of ourselves this year.
Happy 2020 to everyone. 🐬
